Brown Rice + Veggies with Ginger Sauce ~ “Drug Muggers”

~More resources to help you in keeping with my book Fresh Hope … Cleveland.

Welcome to the series Brown Rice + Veggies with Ginger Sauce. It’s a series that’s all about your health. Today’s discussion is about the drugs you take to get well and how they affect your well-being.

Have a great day!

God Bless You!

A few weeks ago I was taking antibiotics for a sinus infection. On the weekend I went to a picnic with friends from church. Because it was sunny and the doxycycline I was taking made me more sensitive to the sun, I put on a sun visor and my 50+ sunscreen. I remember enjoying a piece of KYC chicken and chatting away with the guy seated next to me. After he found out I was taking an antibiotic, he said something I had never heard. He said, “Now you need to take some probiotics to restore your system.” I didn’t know what that meant except that every day I eat Greek yogurt and that I know is a good source of probiotics! However, later on I realized what he was telling me. In the process of prescription drugs helping to heal me of my sinus infection,  they  robbed my body of essential nutrients and stripped away good bacteria that my body needs to help fight off of illness and disease. Therefore, I needed to restore what the antibiotic stole or took from me. My prescription drug was a mugger!

Synthetic Chemicals Called Prescription Drugs

Drug Muggers is the subtitle of this blog post but it’s also the title of a book by pharmacist Suzy Cohen. The complete title is Drug Muggers: Which Medications Are Robbing Your Body of Essential Nutrients–and Natural Ways to Restore Them.

Author Suzy Cohen writes this in her book’s introduction: The fact is, you can’t cure disease with drugs made of synthetic chemicals, especially when they often suppress your body’s ability to produce or use natural, healthy nutrients.

Drugs have an intended effect on the body, but in the process of helping you, they can sometimes put your body in a dangerous state by slowly depleting you of the very nutrients you need to maintain your health and help you heal.

Other Things That Rob or Mug Your Body

And it ‘s not only prescription drugs that rob the body but lifestyles that you keep can also have a serious effect on your health as well. I’m talking about things like: dieting, stress, poor digestion, (drinking) coffee or tea, (drinking) soda pop, laxatives, alcohol, smoking, food allergies, eating processed foods, eating fast foods, eating grapefruit, feeling like you’re loosing your mind, or just sitting all day in an office robs you of vitamin D that is essential for good bone health. All these “lifestyle” issues can affect your health in various ways. All of these rob or mug your body of what it needs.

If you love drinking coffee or tea for example, and have them every day you may be low on calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, iron, and other minerals. That’s because coffee and tea contain tannins which grab these minerals from you body.

So What Can You Do to Help Your Body?

Besides reading Suzy Cohen’s book, you can do a few things to help your body.

1. Ask your pharmacist questions about your medications. This includes how to take the medication (with or without food) and asking about other drug interactions and any allergies you may have.

2. Read the labels on food items that you buy at the store. Know what you are putting into your body including additives, hydrogenated oil, and sugar.

3. Shop the outer perimeter of the grocery store. That’s where you’ll find fresh produce and items that are the least processed!
