Book Reviews

‘Fresh Hope … Cleveland’ quite resourceful

August 14, 2012

By

By Tonya Whitaker Inside The Pew

Author Nanci J. Gravill

Nearly nine years ago, Cleveland author Nanci J. Gravill was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then, she was unable to return to her temporary job. Since she could not work, Gravill was left to live off money generated from investments and retirement. The best course for Gravill was to seek assistance for community resources. By reaching out, she found more than outside help. Gravill discovered a new course that allowed her to cope with her condition and learn how to put all her trust in God.

The end result of her experience is the release, Fresh Hope … Cleveland: Resources to Help You Navigate through Unsettled Times (WestBow Press, $19.99 perfect bound softcover; $3.99 eBook).

Within its pages the reader will find inventive ways to manage those challenges along with money-saving tips, healthcare services, job and mortgage information, and more. At the core, readers will discover (or re-discover) the most important resource once could ever possess: a relationship with God.

“Prayer is the simply talking to God and telling Him how you feel and what you need. Your words do not have to be fancy or in any particular fashion. … Prayer is the most powerful resource you possess. Cast all your cares on God because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7),” Gravill writes in the introduction of part 3, “More Fresh Hope Resources.

While the book includes a bevy of information for individuals seeking community assistance in Cleveland, Gravill said the content is easily adjustable to fit residents in any large, metropolitan city.

“All the resources in the book came from my modern-day Job experience. Even though there are some resources that seem to be just for my area, they will still point someone needing help in the right direction. All they will have to do to find the location in their city is look in the phone book or Google the facility and such!”

The greatest asset of the Fresh Hope … Cleveland is its emphasis on reflection and reconnection. Gravill includes several of Workspace forms to allow readers to chronicle their thoughts on the section’s topic. One cannot help but to be moved by the form in part 4, “Record To Day To Remember.” In it, Gravill challenges readers to ponder the day Christ came into their hearts.

“If you’ve gone to church but have never heard about knowing God personally and having a personal relationship with Him, please take a comfortable seat and let me tell you about the best friend you could ever have!” she divulges in “Something More.”

If anything, Gravill leaves readers with the sense they can survive any situation by believing in Him and by calling on those who show love for their fellow-man through their generous acts. The book is well-balanced and conveys the love Christ has for us is unwavering, we just need to reach out for it.

Transition Plan: Moving Forward ~ Part 4

~ More great information to help you in keeping with Nanci’s new book Fresh Hope … Cleveland!

Transition Plan: Moving Forward

Where ever you are on your journey, you will find helpful information here for your job search and more ideas so don’t loose your home. Being proactive is so imporant.

[I am repeating this introduction to the message in order to help those just joining this series. Please see Part 1 , Part 2, and Part 3 posted from September 4th – September 11.]

There are many things to do as you transition from your last employment position to another opportunity. To avoid being overwhelmed, you’ll find a transition process plan below to help you. This will help you begin to take action for your life.  Here are a few things you may want to keep in mind as you search for a new job. God Bless You!

  • You may not have control over your situation; however, you do have control over how you respond to your present situation.
  • Fix your mind on the fact that you will come through this situation ~ no matter what it takes.
  • Put your trust in God.
  • My new book Fresh Hope … Cleveland: Resources to Help You Navigate through Unsettled Times is filled with all sorts of resources that could be helpful to you. Workspace pages are provided throughout the entire text. These pages provide places to record additional information. To purchase a copy see the Book and ORDER tabs on Nanci’s blog for more information (nancigravill.wordpress.com). You can also puchase a book and helpful materials on October 25 when I’ll be speaking at the Gathering Place in Westlake. See the events tab for more information as registration is required for this talk.

Transition Plan (continued)

Here’s the last part of the Transition Plan series ~ what to do plan and do in the FUTURE!

Future:

1. See a reputable Financial Planner or the like and move your 401K retirement plan from your former company if this applies to you ~ roll it over somewhere.

 2. Work on any odds and ends you need to deal with like cleaning your basement or finishing the quilt you started. Projects can be very therapeutic.

NOTE: Hobbies and projects are great ways to help you deal with the free time you have now have after leaving employment. They will also help you adjust to the changes taking place in your life. However, take care of your job search first of all, that’s your first priority. It may take longer than you imagined to find a job and money does have a way of going quickly. Please be mindful of these things.

God Bless You!

Special Note: Prayers and loving thoughts go out today to those victims and families from 9-11. My prayers go out to people everywhere as well as those here in the United States. More than ever this is a good day to open your heart to Jesus and let Him take control of your heart — your life. If you are reading this today, don’t delay making this life-saving decision. For more, read the RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD tab  on my blog. That will explain how much God loves you and more.

Transition Plan: Moving Forward

Wherever you are on your journey, you will find helpful information here for your job search and more ideas so don’t loose your home. Being proactive is so imporant.

[This series follows a sequence and the order in which you read this information is extremely important. Please read Part 1 from September 4 and Part 2 from September 7. ]

Here are a few things you may want to keep in mind as you search for something helpful for your life. God Bless You!

  • You may not have control over your situation; however, you do have control over how you respond to your present situation.
  • Fix your mind on the fact that you will come through this situation ~ no matter what it takes.
  • Put your trust in God.

Transition Plan (continued)

Please see Part 1 and Part 2 from September 4th and September 7  posts.

Here’s the next part of the Transition Plan!

In the Next 15 – 30 Days:

1. Gather together several people you know for a brainstorming session. Keep in mind other people have different perspectives and can see things we often may not see (two are better than one!).  The individuals you bring together may know other people for you to contact or they may have connections for full or part-time jobs. They may also recommend other professions and work situations if your current field doesn’t seem to show much promise right now. Sometimes you may need to select an alternate profession/position in order to get a job. But don’t worry. You never know you might find something you really love! Be open-minded and see what transpires!

 2. Conduct a brainstorming session regarding ways to hang on to your home if this applies to you. It’s better to do this before you’re in crisis mode. That’s because when you’re already in a crisis, you won’t have many options. It’s always good to be proactive!

3. Check your closets and cupboards and take stock of things before you buy something new.

4. Practice all the money-saving tips found in my book Fresh Hope … Cleveland.

NOTE: Apply late August or early September for Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) in Ohio. For more information on income guidelines and how the process works contact the Ohio Department of Development online at www.energyhelp.ohio.gov or at 1-800-282-0880. The sooner you apply –the better!

Make it a great day!

God Bless You!

Transition Plan (continued)

Please see Part 1 from September 4th post ~ it will give you wisdom on what you should do ASAP (right now). Here’s what you should do This Week.

This Week:

1. Finish putting your resume together along with calling or e-mailing to verify your references.

2. Begin a job search ~ Think present and future employment along with your economic needs.

Present/Future: Find a job to pay the bills for now. At the same time seek a full-time position in your field or a position using your transferrable skills (skills you can take to another type of position — using for example, your writing, research, sales, technical ability, management skills from your past positions).

2. Review your bank statements, IRAs, and pension/severance pay. What money do you have coming in? What are your monthly bills? Can you shave anything off your current monthly expenses?

3. If you need help sorting everything out, start keeping a journal. Writing in a journal will help you reflect and help you adjust to your new set of circumstances. See page 50 in my book Fresh Hope … Cleveland for tips on keeping a journal.

See you back here next Tuesday, September 11, for the next part of this series!

Make it a great day!

God Bless You!
