Wisdom ~ When It’s Needed Most

~ More About Nanci’s new book Fresh Hope … Cleveland

To me it’s so ironic that I could write a book not knowing it would speak so powerfully to the needs of our society right now. People everywhere are hurting, in pain, sick, unemployed, and need a spiritual awakening in their lives. You need only to turn on the evening news to see those things right in your own hometown.

Throughout my book Fresh Hope .. .Cleveland you will see evidence of the book’s slogan, Bringing Wisdom at a Time When It’s Needed Most. That’s exactly what Fresh Hope … Cleveland does. It shares the great bits of wisdom and  information I gathered from 5 – 6 very difficult years of my life. We can learn when things happen in our own lives. However, we can also learn from others even if you don’t know the person! God teaches us in many ways ~ He’s a magnificient teacher and knows each of us so well.

Do you need some wisdom for your life? Follow this link to Fresh Hope … Cleveland:

“God, Am I Nobody?” ~ A new pocket-sized devotional book by Author Sheryl Young

~ Today, instead of hearing about my book Fresh Hope … Cleveland, you’ll find out about another book written by author Sheryl Young. I have the privilege of talking to many other writers and authors on  the social media network LinkedIn. That’s how I met Sheryl.

NOTE: You can read Sheryl’s review of my book Fresh Hope … Cleveland by clicking on the following link: http://20-20faithsight.blogspot.com/2012/03/authors-corner-fresh-hopecleveland-by.html

Introduction

Author Sheryl Young has written a new pocket-sized devotional called God, Am I Nobody? It’s subtitled: Yielding Our Desire for Success to God’s Will for Our Lives, and deals with how Christians might be conflicted between wanting “success” as the world defines it, or following God’s plan for their lives. The big question is, why does God use some people in the spotlight, and others in the shadows?

Sheryl’s been a freelance writer since 1997 for newspapers, magazines and websites. This is her second book. I interviewed Sheryl about her journey with this project. Here’s what she had to say.

Interview

What made you write a devotional on how “worldly success” might differ from God’s plans for us?

It was so hard for me to give all the glory to God when first accepting Jesus as my Savior. Coming out of a theatre background where there was lots of applause, I suffered from what I call “attention-itis” – the need for recognition. Even after starting to write on Christian issues, it took many years to become conscious of giving all praise to the Lord for my endeavors.

I spent three years proposing an earlier book to some major Christian publishers. It received lots of interest, but one by one, they decided not to take a gamble on it. Then the economy crashed and many of my article writing opportunities were down-sized.

One day, while having a pity party over all this, I brushed against a shelf in a Christian bookstore. A book tumbled to the ground, and landed open to a short sermon by Hudson Taylor, A Higher Calling.

Taylor, a 19th century missionary who devoted his life to serving the people of China, wrote about Christians needing to fully turn themselves over to the Lord, no matter the cost, and to put our pride aside even if we had to work in obscurity. This really touched me and made me feel like a self-absorbed fool! It became the basis for the devotional.

So how is the devotional structured?

It’s a convenient, carry-anywhere little book consisting of 17 chapters. Each chapter includes segments of Taylor’s sermonette, along with parallel Bible verses and thoughts for everyday application. The chapters are short enough to be studied one per day, but can also be absorbed at a reader’s own leisurely pace.

And, did you get a “big” publisher for this one?

(She smiles) – No, but it was my choice this time. In proposing it around, it was suggested that if I could stretch this little devotional into 90 days by adding other missionaries’ pieces, it would stand a good chance of major publication. But in researching possible additions, I realized that coming across Taylor’s piece was a Godsend that I couldn’t duplicate…

I felt it would be selling out on the topic, which includes the struggle with pride, to expand the book just to get a bigger publisher. So it’s published by a small press that saw value in its pocket-sized coverage of the subject.

God, Am I Nobody was released in November 2011 by Treble Heart Book’s nonfiction division, MountainView. Although it’s not in bookstores, it’s available at many places online:

-At Amazon.com in paperback: http://www.amazon.com/God-Am-Nobody-Sheryl or for Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/God-Am-I-Nobody-ebook/dp/B006E88XRO/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1329862262&sr=8-1

-At the publisher’s website in paperback or e-book: http://www.trebleheartbooks.com/MVSherylYoung.html

-At Barnes & Noble Nook: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/god-am-i-nobody-sherylyoung/1107956290?ean=2940032890683&itm=1&usri=god%2c+am+i+nobody

-At Smashwords as an e-book: http://www.smashwords.com/books/search?query=god+am+i+nobody

By the way, Sheryl’s first book, What Every Christian Should Know about the Jewish People (she’s a Jewish believer in Jesus), is still available at Amazon, too: http://www.amazon.com/Every-Christian-Should-Jewish-People/dp/141411074X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329925650&sr=8-1.. She and her husband prayed about it and ended up self-publishing that earlier work.

“It was a very rewarding experience, and we have faith that it has reached the hands of those Christians who are interested in being good witnesses and friends to the Jewish people,” she says.

Sheryl blogs on an assortment of topics including politics, faith and entertainment at http://20-20faithsight.blogspot.com.
