Did you Know? Immunization Info

~ More on Nanci J. Gravill’s new book Fresh Hope Cleveland.

August is National Immunization month. Since kids go back to school at the end of this month, it’s a time to make sure both children and adults have their shots up to date. Vaccines keep us from getting an illness or disease — they keep us from also spreading illness as well.

For Adults:

Adults need a tetanus shot every 10 years and people ages 65 and older need a one-time pneumonia shot.

Don’t forget your flu shot when they become available later in September and October. Flu shots will also protect your from chronic illnesses like bronchitis.

For Your Children: More information regarding immunizations:

Last year the state of Ohio came out with new vaccine requirements for all children entering seventh-grade and kindergarten. They are as follows:

1. Kindergarteners are required to get a second dose of the chicken pox vaccine (varicella) before starting school. The final dose of the polio vaccine must be given on or after the child’s fourth birthday.

2. Seventh-graders must get booster shots for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis or tetanus and diphtheria before starting school. The Ohio Department of Health has seen an increase in pertussis cases, also known as whooping cough.

Talk with your doctor about any concerns and depending on health conditions or allergic reaction, some shots may not be required. Discuss available options with a healthcare professional. (per Akron Beacon Journal medical writer Cheryl Powell of August 18, 2010 and examiner.com.)
